Arsenal Rewards Iwobi With £10,000 a Week Deal

Arsenal are set to reward Alex Iwobi with an improved contract after the 19-year-old’s breakthrough spell in the first team. Iwobi signed a new contract to stay at Emirates Stadium until 2019 — understood to be worth less than £1,000 a week — only last October but has since made his full Champions League and Premier League debuts.

The attacking midfielder scored his first senior goal for the club in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Everton and is expected to continue negotiations over a new deal during the international break.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is keen to ensure Iwobi is financially remunerated after quickly acclimatising to the demands of first-team football in difficult circumstances.

However, after scoring on his Premier League debut against Everton at the weekend, Arsenal are planning on giving him another new deal.

According to Evening Standard Iwobi’s performance was one of the few positives to take from Arsenal’s European exit at Barcelona last week and it is believed he could now take his earnings to more than £10,000 a week.

Hector Bellerin, who played with Iwobi at youth team level and provided the assist for his goal at Goodison Park, said: “I’ve always been next to him since the academy so it is nice to see how players come and graduate into the first team. I think it is really deserved. He has been playing well in the last few games and I am really happy for him.”

Arsenal’s victory over Everton was only their second of a gruelling nine-game period spanning 29 days which also comprised one draw and five defeats.

They have slipped 11 points behind Premier League leaders Leicester and six adrift of Tottenham in second place and have been dumped out of Europe and the FA Cup during a spell in which Wenger has come under heightened pressure from a section of the club’s supporters.

A banner demanding his resignation was displayed again at Everton last weekend — despite a hugely improved performance — but Bellerin believes the international break comes at a good time with many players able to enjoy the more sedentary pace of friendly football.

“It is a great time to go on an international break after a win,” he said.

“It is time for the players to charge the batteries because it is the last bit of the season and that is really important for us.”
