Arsenal have announced that Aaron Ramsey will succeed outgoing club captain Mikel Arteta as the new No.8 at the Emirates. The Welsh international has worn 16 since his arrival at the Emirates in 2008 but will now switch shirt numbers following Arteta’s departure from the club.

Ramsey’s shirt change comes just days after Alexis Sanchez also switched numbers, taking the No.7 shirt left vacant on the departure of Tomas Rosicky, and, as was the case with the Chilean, offers a suggestion that rumours of the midfielder’s departure this summer may not be real.

Prior to Arteta the No.8 shirt had also been worn by two of the greatest players in Arsenal’s recent history, their second highest scorer Ian Wright and Invincible Freddie Ljungberg.
The hero of the 1979 FA Cup Final win Alan Sunderland also wore the shirt.

While Ramsey should rightfully feel happy at the upgrade, some Arsenal fans aren’t so optimistic…
