Mehdi Benatia: Would He Be A Good Signing For Arsenal?

Mehdi Benatia
According to the Daily Star and French journalist Manu Lonjon, Arsenal are interested in Bayern Munich centre-back Mehdi Benatia. In fact other reports in France claim that the Gunners are already in negotiations to sign the Morocco international this summer.

Troubled two years in Germany

The centre-back has endured a difficult two year spell in Bavaria following his move from Roma in 2014. The defender cost a fee of around £21million, but has been restricted to just 29 Bundesliga appearances for the German giants because of injury.

From the noises coming out of his camp it seems like he is desperate to leave the reigning German champions and secure a move elsewhere. The arrival of Mats Hummels at Bayern from Dortmund this summer will mean that it will be even harder for the defender to play first team football in the new season.

The 29-year-old was a highly-rated defender in Italy prior to his big money move to Bayern and was even named in the Serie A team of the season in 2013/14, which lead to his big money move to Pep Guardiola’s Bayern.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is reportedly a big fan of the defender and it seems that liking could turn to a solid bid for the former-Roma star in the near future.

Does Arsenal need centre-back cover?

At the moment Laurent Koscielny, Gabriel and Per Mertesacker are all competing for the two centre-back spots in the Gunners starting line-up. The Gunners also have youngster Callum Chambers who is highly versatile, but who struggled to get into the team on a regular basis last season.

Mertesacker looks to be the most vulnerable centre-back to miss out on those starting spots. Another centre-back may just be needed this summer, as Koscielny does seem to pick-up a lot of injuries during the campaign.

Whether Benatia would be a good signing or not would probably depend on how much he will cost the Gunners in transfer fee and wages. Bayern are likely to want to recoup as much of their initial outlay as possible, so the centre-back is unlikely to be cheap.

The north London club no doubt need to reinforce their squad ahead of next season, but Arsene Wenger’s side are still odds of just 6/1 to claim the title next season, which currently means that only Manchester City under Pep Guardiola are shorter odds.

Most Gunners fans will know though that the current squad is not good enough to win the league and a couple of new additions would definitely improve the team’s chances of winning the title.
