Should Wenger Let The Young Defender Go?

Calum Chambers
News of Wenger’s new found desire to transfer more than one top-notch player during the summer might come with some downsides. The biggest one would be that some of Arsenal’s current players are looking to leave in order to get some more game time. According to the Daily Mail, Calum Chambers might be handing in his transfer request if an additional center-back is signed by Wenger.

Rumors have it that Napoli’s Koulibaly could be a primary target for the Frenchman who, due to injuries, had trouble at some point during the 2015-2016 season when he had to use Monreal in the center. Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi was also linked to the Gunners as well as Wolfsburg’s Ricardo Rodriguez. It would be a pity to lose Chambers though as he is one of the most versatile players in Wenger’s lot. He can play as a full-back, as a center-back and as a defensive midfielder. Unfortunately, he is not yet at the level that would allow him to take ownership of any position. On the right you have Bellerin, down the middle you have Koscielny and Mertesacker, on the left Monreal and Gibbs and in the middle there are Elneny and Coquelin. Hopefully, Wenger will find a way to keep Chambers around or at least convince him to leave on loan for one year rather than to leave for good. Despite making few appearances for Arsenal this season since joining from Southampton he still looks like he has a lot to offer. He managed some decent performances this past season and even scored once in the FA Cup.

Aside from his promising future, Chambers also has some unique abilities which will surely come in useful at some point during a season. He is strong and tall enough to play in the middle of the defense, he is fast enough to play in the flank and he is also creative and technical enough to play as a midfielder. He basically covers 3 or 4 positions which looking at the way things went last year, will come in very handy. Wenger needs to find some way to keep the players who don’t get to play as much but can be quite helpful to the team. Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gibbs and Ospina are in the same situation. Even if they did struggle sometimes when making first team appearances, it would not be pleasant to see any of them leave.
