Per Mertesacker Will Be Out For "Months" - Wenger

Mertesacker Shouting
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Per Mertesacker will spend the next few months on the sidelines after his knee injury was “more serious than expected”.

The centre-back felt pain in his knee following last Friday’s 1-1 draw with Lens in France and the World Cup winning German was left out of Arsenal’s tour of America as a precaution.

However, the injury turned out to be far more serious than the club envisioned with Mertesacker having surgery this week while reports suggest the 31-year-old could be out of action for five months.

“We have bad news on Per Mertesacker,” Wenger told the club’s official website. “He played in Lens on Friday night, he finished the game and had a little pain on his knee.

“We found out the next day that it was much more serious than expected. He had surgery yesterday in Germany. It all went well.

“I know you will ask me for how long he will be out. I don’t know that, it’s [some] months, but I don’t know [exactly] how long he will be out for.”

Mertesacker has been a key defender for Arsenal over the past five years so his absence is going to hurt the north Londoners unless they can attract a top quality defender before the transfer window closes.

According to the Daily Star, the Gunners have looked at German defender Shkodran Mustafi as a possible replacement.

Mertesacker made 24 appearances in the Premier League last season but missed six of their final nine fixtures, while also missing several other games throughout the campaign with niggling problems.
