Would Signing Mahrez Help Arsenal Win The Title?

Riyad Mahrez
Yesterday the British tabloids were awash with the story of Arsenal being close to signing Leicester playmaker Riyad Mahrez for a deal worth £41.8million. The story apparently emanated from the French press, but it could yet be another false story about the Gunners.

However, the thought of last season’s Player of the Year plying his trade alongside the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil is a highly entertaining one.

Leicester very reluctant to sell

Understandably Leicester are rather reluctant to part with their star player, especially after they lost French defensive midfielder N’Golo Kante to Chelsea earlier in the summer.

Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri has been very vocal about the fact that the Algerian playmaker is happy in the Midlands and that he is not for sale this summer. If a big club did actually come in with a massive offer and Mahrez wanted to leave there is a feeling he would leave.

There has been no indication that Mahrez has stated that he wants to leave the Foxes. However, it is only human nature for the Algerian star’s head to be turned by interest from elsewhere. Reportedly Mahrez’s agent has denied that the Gunners have yet to show any concrete interest in the star.

Mahrez provides excitement and end product

Riyad Mahrez scored 17 times last season and produced a further ten assists. The 25-year-old throughout his career had the skill, but last season he added an end product to his game. Something just clicked and suddenly he was a true match-winner.

The fact that he was involved in so many of the Foxes goals last season proves what sort of influence he can have on a team. He helped Ranieri’s men pull-off one of the biggest shocks in the history of the Premier League by winning the title.

Spending on the right players

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that the north London club will spend big if the right players came along, which is pretty much what he says every summer.

Most fans have been obsessing over a new striker arriving to improve their bid to win the Premier League title next season, which they are odds of 6/1 to achieve.

Maybe if the Gunners signed another player who could contribute so much going forward that they would no longer be in need of a new striker. Riyad Mahrez is a very good player.

However, he is just another of a million players linked with a big money move to Arsenal each transfer window, so it remains to be seen if Arsenal really will make a move for the influential Algerian international star.
