Walcott Will Still Take Penalties For Arsenal - Wenger

Cazorla and Theo Walcott
Arsene Wenger has explained why Santi Cazorla took a penalty instead of Theo Walcott in the victory over Watford.

Cazorla opened the scoring from the penalty spot as Arsenal recorded their first win of the 2016/17 season with a convincing 3-1 win over Watford.

Walcott, who took and missed his penalty in the 4-3 defeat to Liverpool on the opening weekend, was not in line to take the responsibility on Saturday despite starting the game.

And after the game Wenger was quick to explain that Walcott would not take the penalty as he is behind Cazorla in the club's order of takers.

Asked why he made a change, Wenger told reporters: "Look, I name three penalty takers before every single game. I did not take Theo completely out of it, because he was number two."

Although not trusted with the spot-kick, the 27-year-old winger would enjoy a commanding performance against the Hornets.

Deployed in a wide position, Walcott registered two shots on target, won 75% of his duels as well as pitching in with two interceptions.

He stated in pre-season that his interest in becoming a central striker was over and would return to plying his trade as a winger.

With Alexis Sanchez starring against Watford as the side's frontman, Walcott's role on the flank was further cemented.

Sanchez, meanwhile, had a 100% shot accuracy from three efforts, an assist, a goal himself and a pass accuracy of 89%.
